LDJB vs. The Baron on the wheel of steals...

The Baron's top 10 Tipex-ed treats

Love 'Doggone'

No loops here! Just a few seconds from what is about a 10-minute drum solo from George Suranovich from the Mark II version of Arthur Lee's band. Copped famously by DJ Shadow, the LP itself is an obscure psyche-rock gem. I hear dear old 'confused' Arthur is just out of chokey too. Gawd bless him, for he didn't just give the drummer some, but the best part of one whole side of wax!

Pixies 'La La Love You'

Most people of a certain age will always adore the Pixies, and not just for Kim Deal's great 'rock' melons. What the hell else was there that was any cop at the dog-end of the 80's? Not much. On a filler track from the "Doolittle" LP, drummer David Lovering not only gets to treat us to his vocal stylings, but he funks up a storm on the kit too!

Paul McCartney 'Momma Miss America'

The pick of the two tracks on Macca's debut LP with great wodges of open drums on them, and all played by the man himself. Recorded on a home studio, it shows a bit, with drums only on the left channel, but doubled up for a bit more punch here. A Lo-Fi break if ever there was one.

The Stone Roses 'Daybreak'

More Roses action! Reni wasn't just good at wearing flares and little fisherman's hats you know! One of the few moments on their Zep rip-off LP that doesn't have about three 'sniffing shit' guitar solos splattered all over it. The Vulture and I were listening to this for the first time in years recently and when this bit came on we both involuntarily screamed 'BREAK!!' in unison, and then had a knowing little chuckle.

The Smashing Pumpkins 'I Am One'

A great chunk of, erm, smashing drums from an early single, and one that actually quite rocks, as they say. Not at all easy to track down on wax though. You occasionally see the 10" on shop walls for 40 notes 'cos all the Skate Rap Nu-Metal Dark Wave Kids, or whatever teenagers are called these days, dig 'em still. Personally, I believe that Billy Corgan is the Samson of the Rock world: Less hair = more shite!

Ride 'Dreams Burn Down'

The Shoegazing Break! Mercy! Hey, everyone was getting a touch of the funky drummers in those days, and Ride we no exception. Smothered in echo and quite heavy duty, this one deserves picking up by someone. Not many freestylers in The Projects will have heard of this lot, I'll wager.

Amon Duul II 'Archangel's Thunderbird'

The Krautrock break! And what a thumper it is! I bet you though that Germans could never be this funky. The tune is a flippin' belter too. Hard to come by on original LP, but fairly easy bought on their 'Lemmingmania' best of…Already spotted in the 'Breaks' section of a certain record shop.

Iggy Pop 'Lust For Life'

This one is just about as plain as the nose on your face, but has anybody copped for it yet?? Surely the Iggster doesn't even have a lawyer! Maybe it's just too obvious. Who cares, 'cos 'Lust For Life' is a flippin' ace LP as well and I love it!

The Byrds 'Fido'

From the bands 'shite' period it has to be said. But hey, a massive Country Rock Song About His Dog drum break! Here we have the whole thing with woops and hollers for good measure. A plop LP that can be found for cheap in most provincial shops, and with good reason.

Television 'Marquee Moon'

Look, this is from my favourite LP ever. There, I've said it. And I was utterly disgusted to find a flippin' break on it, to be honest, even if it's only quite a rudimentary one. I'm not sure I shall ever come to terms with the prospect of the likes of Afroman robbin' this one, but they will eventually, the sods.

So, there we have it, and the beauty is, there are undoubtedly hundreds more to collect. Finally we must come to the moral of this story: Don't look down so far at those pale, skinny, no-burd, VU-loving wimps you sometimes call your friends (but only when the cool kids aren't around) 'cos their vinyl stash might just hold drum-tastic treasures beyond the wildest dreams of your Akai !
