The Power Pack Orchestra 'A is for Action' (MFP 5705)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Yee-ha! The 'Dukes of Hazzard' theme is dreadful!! Wasn't one of Roscoe P Coltraine's deputies called Anus??? How did they get away with that? Is it a genuine name for a fella in the Deep South? Shudder to think!
Considering this album was released in the mid 80's, the version of 'The Professionals' is not so bad-if dodgy synths are your cup of tea...at least there is a bit of wah-wah action.
The Power Pack Orchestra 'Crimebusters' (MFP 5768)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

The cheap-synth horror show continues! 'The Bill' must be one of the very worst cop show themes there has ever been...amply illustrating the quality of the show itself...
Now, this is more like it...'The Sweeney'. Even with an 80's makeover, its still got the right stuff.
The Power Pack Orchestra 'Favourite Sports Themes' (MFP 5818)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

As if to illustrate why ITV should never be allowed the rights to league footie, 'The Saint & Greavsie Theme' rears its ugly head-its low-rent rubbish, just like the oafs it's named after...and a Standard library tune too...Christ!
More 80's synth decimation of a classic in the shape of Brian Bennett's 'Chase Side Shoot Up'. Not as bad as you might imagine, but bad enough.

Sounds Superb

Jack Parnell & His Orchestra 'The TV Times Record Of Your Top TV Themes' (SPR 90035)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

Oh my God...where do we start ! So much of this LP is awful. The closing 'Galloping Home' from 70's kiddies horsy drama 'Black Beauty' just about puts the lid on it good and proper. Totally repellent.
Possibly the worst version of John Barry's 'Theme From The Persuaders' we have heard just about raises its head out of the mire. Recently spotted for an amazing, ridiculous sum on a dealer list on the strength of this. Some people eh? Get one for 50p somewhere instead and you will still feel robbed.

Helmut Zacharias & His Orchestra 'Light My Fire' (SPR 90038)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

'Step Inside Love' ??? No way !...Bugger off !!!
A big, beaty groover to be had in 'The House That Jack Built', that bowls along nicely with plenty of cool brass, and not overdone with the maestro's' own scraping violin.
Francis Lai 'The Man & His Music' (SPR 90042)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

The Lai penned 'Theme From Love Story' is a very heinous thing indeed, sending us blubbing from the room, and not because Ali McGraw snuffed it. Served her right.
The only reason to bother with this album-the killer lounge cut 'African Summer'. Slinky piano, parping brass and some deft organ touches make for an essential club tune.

Rostal & Schaefer 'The Two Pianos of...' (SPR 90047)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

Even the arrangements of Alyn Ainsworth cannot salvage anything from these two old duffers and their piano-tinkering. The worst? Where to start?? 'Imagine' is even more heinous than you would expect, and that's saying something!
"For All We Know' at least has a semblence of a back-beat, but is still twin piano kak of the highest order...DON'T!!!!

Assagai 'Afrorock' (SPR 90054)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

The interestingly titled 'Wanga' contains some terrible stubbed-toe style wailing that its almost impossible to endure...oooowww!
The big and brassy groover 'Kinzambi' sounds a lot like an Afro-Rock take on 'whole Lotta Love'. Just about the pick of several nice 'uns to be had here.

Jr Walker & the All Stars 'Shotgun' (SPR 90055)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

Although generally top-notch gear, Jr falls flat on his arse on a couple of blues numbers, especially 'Good Rockin'. Stick to the funk dude!
Tight funk workout sir? Then give 'Do the Boomerang' a try. Very nice indeed!

Jack Parnell & His Orchestra 'Great Film Scores Of The '70's'     (SPR 90056)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

NOOOOOOO ! Not that, not 'The Entertainer'. Christ on a bike, turn it off. I recall some utterly crap sad clown puppet routine from an act on The Tom O'Connor Show using this tune to hypnotise the elderly. Evil ! Evil !
What we have here is just about the best version of 'Enter The Dragon' committed to wax, and not a word of a lie. Bloody great !

Kenny Clare & Ronnie Stephenson 'Drum Spectacular' (SPR 90057)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

Hmmm...'old' jazz...not good! The slow number 'Just You! Just Me!' is especially lame...snore...
The only reason why folk might be interested in this is for tracks like 'Talkin' About Drums'-essentially a 3 minute drum solo...

Jack Parnell & His Orchestra 'More TV Times Top TV Themes'    (SPR 90061)

Laxative Sounds

Superlative Sounds

Heck ! Spoilt for choice again.. An utterly awful rendition of Charles Aznavour's bile-summoning show tune 'She' kicks us off and makes you want to throw the record away instantly.
Dig out you "bra & pants apron" because it's 'Up To Date', the theme to the ITV sitcom 'Man About The House'. Not beard -strokingly cool by any means, but a whole damn lotta fun.
The records listed are in a rough chronological order and we'll try to update the list as more MFP releases find their way into our possession! As always, please contribute your albums for inclusion!
