The Don Reeve Sound 'Mighty Hammond' (MFP 50013)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

'A Walk in the Black Forest' is must refer to the one in the Blair Witch Project! Nasty!
A drum-rattling 'Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine in' medly is top of the heap here-one of the best around!
Geoff Love & His Orchestra 'Big Suspense Movie Themes'         (MFP 50035)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Help ! 'The Harry Lime Theme' is totally not good at all. Plodding and lame with the zither bits sounding like they are played by Hank Marvin-with a poorly hand-and a blindfold on. Nonsense !
A pretty faithful but unremarkable version of 'Shaft' is what makes this album worth having, but its not one to pay any kind of money for. No one in the band seemed to give a damn either because they are certainly not worried about keeping in time on it.
'Smash Hits 72' (MFP 50048)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

The pipes! Och aye, the pipes! 'Amazing Grace' has a sporran full of nasty surprises.
'Popcorn' done to a turn! If anything, its better than the genuine article with plenty of pounding drums. Yum!
The Conway Sinfonia 'Classics with a Beat' (MFP 50049)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Flashback to Platoon, 'cos we are indeed in a World of Pain where the is no end or hope of escape!!!!
Its not often that you find an album on MFP with absolutely no redeeming features at all, but here it is!!!
The Power & the Glory 'Sing 12 Rock & Gospel Hits' (MFP 50051)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

It could be a fair assumption that Kenny Everett got the idea for his Brother Lee Love thang after a dose of this record. 'Amazing Grace' is particularly disgraceful, even for a bunch of Jesus-pushers...this one's for Satan!
A slow burning 'Oh Happy Day' has a righteous dose of Hammond to covet! Amen!
Elektrik Cokernut 'Go Moog!' (MFP 50071)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

'Morning Has Broken'...sounds like its not the only thing!
Let's skip by the very same version of 'Popcorn' that surfaced a few records back and extoll the delights of the Glam/Moog crossover original 'Jungle Juice'. Absolutely bonkers!!!!
Telltale 'Rainbow' (MFP 50087)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Spoilt for choice really with an album full of kiddies songs sung by beardy hippies...top song title has to be 'A Tree, He Asks No Questions'...huh??? Stay away from the brown blotter acid...
Now then, the 'Rainbow' theme, as we're sure those of a certain age will recall, is blessed in parts with a nice beat and some wigged-out guitar...
Geoff Love & His Orchestra 'Your Favourite TV Themes'            (MFP 50091)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Lordy ! 'Country Matters' conjures up a fairly rural picture indeed. Bad-tempered farmers, burning pyres of culled livestock and the stench of the silage pit...
Wow ! A free-jazz take on 'Ironside'. I shit you not. Bass, flute and piano do their own wonderful thing and turn this into a real corker-especially if you turn the pitch up just a touch...go on, try it-you'll like it !
Denny Wright & The Hustlers 'Non Stop Pepsi Party' (MFP 50098)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

It's time for the 'Fille Rouge', and Luxembourg play their joker with 'Tijuana Taxi' the 'It's A Knockout' theme. It sucks logs !
'Shout About Pepsi' has it all; funky percussion, Mohawks-style hammond and saucy sax !
The Roger Webb Trio 'Plays Gershwin' (MFP 50099)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Take yer pick! It's dull, dull dull-full on nim-nim-nim stand-up bass playing too...give over!.
Mr Webb lets us down badly with a piano trio LP that does not reward even pence. 'Summertime' is probably the least snooze-worth thing on offer, but that isnt saying much at all.
Chico Arnez 'Non-Stop Dance Party' (MFP 50179)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Even Kylie did 'The Loco-Motion' better than this in the days before she got sauced up...extremely lame.
'Soul Finger' is a cracker; brass, Hammond and a flippin massive drum break too...what more could you possibly want?
King Kong 'Funky Reggae' (MFP 50190)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

'A Little Bit of Soap'...Showaddywaddy in a reggae stylee only conjures up images of the shower time in The Big House...
The only real stand-out on here is a bash at 'Funky Nassau' that doesnt get too much of a pasting...just about not bad.
'Dance to the Music' (MFP 50193)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

With twenty cuts on here there is a right load of old cock to chose from, but somehow those 50's covers always seem to stand out in a bad way, so its a toss up between 'Leader of the pack' and 'Da doo ron ron', as you can't really put a fag paper between them in terms of being gratuitously dreadful...
As you might expect from the title of the LP, they have a good old bash at Sly's biggest hit, and blimey-it's really not half bad at all thank you very much!!!
Alan Moorhouse & His Bond Street Brigade 'McCartney, Mendelson, Mancini Go Marching With...' (MFP 50198)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Why in God's name was Alan Moorhouse allowed to carve out a career dishing up 'Hits In A Military Swinging Style' ? There are at least four of these efforts and between them contain one solitary track worth hearing. Everything is smothered with terrible parade ground rat-a-tat drums. The sleeve notes state that Moorhouse 'is one of the most respected arrangers on the British music scene'...Not on the strength of this kak he ain't.
We're struggling a bit here...Ooof ! Bought on a very fallow day round the charity shops, just to see What kind of damage Mr. Moorhouse would inflict on 'Live And Let Die'. The boy did a job on it all right...
Geoff Love & His Orchestra 'Big Bond Movie Themes' (MFP 50227)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Owww ! The hateful little cod-reggae bit in the middle of 'Live And Let Die' is just SOOOOO bad it's not true.
A belting run through 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' does the business. Right up there with the best.
Michel Legrand 'The Windmills Of Your Mind' (MFP 50240)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

He picked up a few dirty habits from his time as an arranger for Miles Davis and his insertion of an atonal Yorkshire Colliery brass band into the middle of 'Wuthering Heights' is very unnecessary. By 'eck !
'Theme From The Go Between' is a very Barry-esque affair - in fact almost to the extent of inviting litigation...but it does not disappoint.
Geoff Love & His Orchestra 'Big Terror Movie Themes' (MFP 50248)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Blimey ! 'Bach Toccata In D Minor'. Mercy ! What a load of cobblers. Say no more.
Let it be known that this is a pretty fine LP all round, but the pick of the bunch of funky soundtracks is from the obscure 'Three Days Of The Condor'. It's a little beauty and no mistake and partly why dealers try and bump the price up so much on this album.
Hugo Montenegro 'Broadway 'n' Brass' (MFP 50303)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

This is a dreadful album of awful show tunes recorded in the mid-60's before Hugo even got a whiff of Moog madness...DON'T!!!!
Not even a half-decent track on it. During this time Monenegro was releasing album after album of utterly bonkers Moog-groovers and this shite is all that MFP could license to cash in???
Jack Parnell & His Orchestra 'Braziliana' (MFP 50327)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

'Caravan' ?? obviously referring to one parked in a lay-by in Bangor rather than one found on the Rio beachfront !
Copies are now much prized, with 'Deixa Isso Pra La' seemingly being the reason. We're a bit non-plussed about it personally though.
Geoff Love & His Orchestra 'Star Wars & Other Space Themes'    (MFP 50355)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Christ ! 'Things To Come' is the sort of thing that the Coldstream Guards play ! No place for this in the disco-fied sci-fi age.

Yes ! 'Space 1999'. Orange catsuits all round and Mikki Berenyi's shape-shifting mum. What a show ! What a Tune !

Geoff Love's Big Disco Sound 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind & Other Disco Galactic Themes' (MFP 50375)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Yuk ! The un-funky disco version of 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind' is just well out of order. Red card ! Chock full of that disgraceful 'uhm-da-uhm-da-uhm-da-uhm-da' walking bassline that makes everything it graces suck so badly. Who though that was a good idea ferchrissakes ?
A splendid take on Nick Ingman's 'Space Patrol' is well ahead of the pack on this LP. Groovy electric piano & bass grind along nicely to the beat. Well worth it.
Mandingo 'Tiger in the Night' (MFP 50428)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

This is quite possibly the very bestest MFP album that there is-culled from the classic 4-LP series on EMI, every track is nothing but a winner for sure. If you haven't got it already, then you ought to get one quick!
'Black Rite' is a big Mandingo fave round these parts...big-ass guitar and jungle beats all the way. Very sweet.
Sergio Mendes & Brazil 77 'In Concert' (MFP 50434)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

As with most Mendes albums, the screech-some female singers always take the edge of the groovy goodies, an by the time you get to 'The Look of Love' at the end of the LP, you've had just about all you can take of 'em...
A You'll often see this LP at criminal prices in shops on the strength of the ho-hum drum break on 'Viramundo'. It's not a bad Latin groover, but tread carefully.
Wes Montgomery 'Windy' (MFP 50436)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Wes gets decidely ordinary when he sticks to the smokey jazz standards, and 'Green Leaves of Summer' is very dreary...
There are some cracking Beatles covers on this comp of the last pair of Wes LP's on Blue Note, but the top groover has to be a version of The Association's 'Windy' that's as cool as the summer breeze-nice!
Geoff Love & His Orchestra 'Themes For Superheroes' (MFP 50439)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

Two sides of the same coin are on show here: on side one we have the terrible limp lettuce of a country waltz that is the 'Bionic Woman Theme'. Come to think of it the show itself was fairly lame and awash with sentiment in the same way this track is.
Ah, now...side two serves up an immense take on 'The Six Million Dollar Man'. Great stuff-drive, power and energy. 'I can't hold her...she's breakin' up'. Thats the stuff !
Burt Bacharach 'In Concert' (MFP 50442)

No Pain, No Gain

The Principle Pleasures

'Come Touch the Sun' is too parpy by half...very un-smooth for old Burt...thumbs down.
A nice LP all round, but a brisk run through of 'Bond Street' comes out on top of the lot...
